Christmas Day Description
Christmas Day celebrates the birth of Jesus Christ and is, alongside Constitution Day, Norway's most important holiday. While Christmas Eve ("Julaften") is the main celebration with a festive dinner of "ribbe" (pork ribs) or "pinnekjøtt" (dried lamb ribs), Christmas Day features church services and extended family gatherings. Traditional foods include "lutefisk" in coastal regions and "riskrem" (rice cream dessert) nationwide. All businesses, banks, and government offices close completely. Norwegian "jul" traditions blend Christian observance with ancient Norse midwinter customs, creating an atmosphere of candlelight, warmth, and familial coziness.
