Constitution Day Description
Constitution Day (Syttende mai) is Norway's national day, commemorating the signing of the constitution at Eidsvoll in 1814. It is the most joyous and colorful celebration in the Norwegian calendar. Children's parades ("barnetoget") fill every city and village — the highlight being the Oslo parade passing the Royal Palace, where the Royal Family waves from the balcony. Norwegians dress in traditional "bunad" costumes from their regions. Ice cream, hot dogs, and "17. mai kaker" are consumed in abundance. All businesses, banks, and offices close. The day celebrates democracy, independence, and Norwegian identity with unmatched enthusiasm.
