Good Friday Description
Good Friday is a solemn day commemorating the crucifixion of Jesus Christ. In Norway, it marks the beginning of the extended Easter break. Virtually all shops, banks, and government offices close — Norway imposes one of the strictest closure policies of any holiday. Public entertainment is historically restricted, though rules have relaxed. Many Norwegians travel to mountain cabins ("hytter") to begin their "påskefjellet" (Easter mountain) vacation, skiing and reading crime novels — the "påskekrim" tradition is uniquely Norwegian. Church services are held nationwide, and the day retains a quiet, reflective character.
