Boxing Day Description
Boxing Day on December 26th is a nationwide statutory holiday in New Zealand, following Christmas Day. It is traditionally associated with giving gifts to service workers and those in need, though in modern New Zealand it is best known as the biggest shopping day of the year. Boxing Day sales see malls and retail stores packed from early morning, with major discounts on electronics, clothing, furniture, and homewares. Unlike Christmas Day, most retail shops are permitted to open and do so with extended hours. Government offices, banks, and schools are closed, but commercial activity is in full swing. It also marks the beginning of the summer holiday exodus, with highways congested as Kiwis head to beaches, lakes, and holiday homes. Popular destinations include the Coromandel, Mount Maunganui, Nelson-Tasman, and Queenstown-Lakes. The Boxing Day Test cricket match (if scheduled) draws significant viewership. In yacht-racing circles, the Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race starts on Boxing Day and is followed by many New Zealand sailing enthusiasts. In 2026, December 26th falls on a Saturday, and under Mondayisation rules, the following Monday becomes the observed public holiday for workers who would not normally work weekends.
