Day after New Year's Day Description
The Day after New Year's Day on January 2nd is a unique New Zealand public holiday, providing a second consecutive day off that extends the New Year celebration. It is a nationwide statutory holiday. Government offices, banks, post offices, and schools are closed. Most retail shops are also closed, though some tourist-area businesses and dairies (convenience stores) may open. Combined with New Year's Day, this creates one of the busiest holiday periods in New Zealand, with highways congested as holidaymakers travel to and from summer destinations. Beaches, lakes, and national parks are at peak usage. Many families use this period for camping (freedom camping is regulated — check local council bylaws), barbecues, and water sports. The Backyard and other summer music events take place around this date. Since both January 1st and 2nd fall mid-week in 2026, many workers will take additional leave days to bridge to surrounding weekends. Accommodation and ferry bookings between the North and South Islands should be made well in advance.
