Good Friday Description
Good Friday on April 3, 2026 commemorates the crucifixion of Jesus Christ and is a nationwide statutory holiday in New Zealand. It is one of the most strictly observed public holidays — under the Shop Trading Hours Act, almost all retail shops must remain closed. The only exceptions are dairies, petrol stations, pharmacies, and some food outlets. This makes it one of the quietest days of the year in urban centres. Government offices, banks, post offices, and schools are closed. Churches hold special services, often featuring the Stations of the Cross or Tenebrae. Good Friday marks the beginning of the four-day Easter weekend (Friday through Monday), which is the last major break before winter and is heavily used for short vacations, visiting family, or home projects. Public transport runs on reduced Sunday/holiday schedules — some regional routes may not operate. Easter trading laws are occasionally debated, but for now Good Friday remains a day when most of New Zealand genuinely pauses. Restaurants and cafes are generally closed, though hotel restaurants may serve guests.
