Waitangi Day on February 6th is New Zealand's national day, commemorating the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi (Te Tiriti o Waitangi) in 1840 between the British Crown and Māori chiefs, which established New Zealand as a nation. The main celebrations take place at the Waitangi Treaty Grounds in the Bay of Islands, where the Governor-General, Prime Minister, and Māori leaders gather for dawn ceremonies, waka (canoe) displays, cultural performances, and political speeches.
