Good Friday (Biyernes Santo) on April 3, 2026 is the most solemn day of the Philippine year, commemorating the crucifixion and death of Jesus Christ. It is a regular holiday observed nationwide. The Siete Palabras (Seven Last Words) reflection is broadcast on television and radio throughout the afternoon, with many Filipinos attending church services. In San Fernando, Pampanga, actual crucifixions are reenacted by devotees (a practice deeply rooted in local folk Catholicism, though officially discouraged by the Church). The Santo Entierro (Holy Burial) procession in the evening features life-sized statues of the dead Christ carried through streets in elaborately decorated carrozas. Government offices, banks, and schools close. Nearly all businesses, malls, and entertainment venues close — it is the one day when the Philippines truly comes to a standstill. Swimming at beaches is traditionally discouraged (it is considered unlucky). The day is characterized by silence, prayer, and family reflection. Travel between provinces continues but at a quieter pace than Maundy Thursday. Public transport runs on minimal schedules.
