Labor Day (Araw ng Manggagawa) on May 1st is a regular holiday in the Philippines honoring Filipino workers and their contributions to the nation. It is marked by rallies, marches, and demonstrations organized by labor unions and workers' groups — the largest typically converge on Mendiola Street near Malacañang Palace or Liwasang Bonifacio in Manila, advocating for higher wages, job security, and workers' rights. The President often uses the occasion to announce new labor policies or wage increases. Government offices, banks, post offices, and schools close. Private sector employers are required to follow holiday pay rules. May 1st also coincides with the Flores de Mayo (Flowers of May) festival season, and Santacruzan processions — religious-cultural pageants featuring sagalas (beauties) in elaborate gowns parading under decorated arches — are held in many communities throughout the month.
