Corpus Christi Description
Corpus Christi celebrates the real presence of Christ in the Eucharist and is observed with religious processions in towns and cities across Portugal. The most notable celebrations occur in Penafiel and Monção, where streets are decorated with elaborate flower carpets. The feast always falls on a Thursday, sixty days after Easter. Banks, government offices, and most businesses close nationwide. The holiday dates back to medieval Portuguese tradition, and though some regions celebrate with more intensity than others, it remains a widely respected religious observance.
