Good Friday commemorates the crucifixion of Jesus Christ and is one of Portugal's most solemn religious observances. Elaborate street processions occur in Braga, Óbidos, and other historic towns, featuring hooded penitents and life-sized religious statues. Many Portuguese observe fasting traditions, with the typical meal being "bacalhau" (salted cod) prepared simply. Banks, government offices, and most businesses close nationwide. Churches hold special services, and the atmosphere throughout the country is notably quiet and reflective.
