The Immaculate Conception celebrates Mary conceived without original sin and holds special significance as Portugal's patroness since 1646, when King John IV declared Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception the Queen and Patroness of Portugal. Religious ceremonies take place at major shrines, and many attend mass. This holiday traditionally marks the start of Lisbon's Christmas illuminations.
