Defender of the Fatherland Day Description
Originally established in 1918 as Red Army Day, this holiday now honors all who have served or are serving in the Russian Armed Forces, and has evolved into an unofficial Men's Day celebrated across the country. Military parades and wreath-laying ceremonies take place at war memorials, with the primary ceremony at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in the Alexander Garden near the Kremlin walls. The President and Defense Minister attend official events, and a solemn evening concert is held at the State Kremlin Palace. Government offices, banks, and most businesses close. At homes and workplaces, women give cards, gifts, and congratulations to male colleagues, relatives, and friends — from small boys to elderly veterans. The day blends patriotic military commemoration with broader cultural celebration of men's roles in society and family.
