International Women's Day Description
One of Russia's most beloved holidays, International Women's Day is celebrated as a combination of Mother's Day, Valentine's Day, and a celebration of spring's arrival. The streets fill with men carrying bouquets of mimosa, tulips, and roses — flower sales skyrocket in the days leading up to March 8. Women are honored with gifts, chocolates, perfume, and heartfelt congratulations at home, in workplaces, and in schools, where children prepare handmade cards and perform concerts for their female teachers. Restaurants are packed with celebratory dinners. Government offices, banks, and most businesses close. While the day retains its historical connection to the women's rights movement from the early 20th century, in modern Russia it is primarily a day of beauty, appreciation, and affectionate celebration of all women — mothers, daughters, wives, and colleagues alike.
