Russia Day Description
Commemorates the adoption of the Declaration of State Sovereignty of the Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic on June 12, 1990, a pivotal step toward the creation of the modern Russian Federation after the dissolution of the USSR. The day is marked by flag-raising ceremonies, concerts, and patriotic events, with the main celebration taking place on Red Square and Vasilyevsky Spusk in Moscow featuring performances by leading artists and a grand fireworks display. The President presents State Prizes of the Russian Federation for outstanding achievements in science, culture, and the arts at a Kremlin ceremony. Government offices, banks, and most businesses close. For many Russians, however, Russia Day is less emotionally resonant than Victory Day or New Year, and is often treated as a pleasant summer day off, with city festivals, street fairs, and family outings to parks and rivers defining the public mood.
