Saudi Founding Day Description
Established in 2022 by Royal Decree, Founding Day commemorates the establishment of the First Saudi State by Imam Muhammad bin Saud in Diriyah in 1727, predating the unification of the modern Kingdom by nearly two centuries. The holiday celebrates three centuries of Saudi history, culture, and heritage. Streets, buildings, and public squares are decorated with the Founding Day logo and traditional Saudi motifs. Cultural festivals showcase Najdi architecture, Ardah (traditional sword dance), poetry, crafts, and cuisine. Government offices, banks, and most businesses close. Families dress in traditional attire, and cities like Riyadh and Diriyah host grand firework displays and drone light shows. The holiday reflects the Saudi leadership's emphasis on reconnecting citizens with the deep historical roots of the Saudi state beyond the modern unification in 1932.
