Good Friday Description
Good Friday commemorates the crucifixion of Jesus Christ and is one of Sweden's oldest public holidays, historically a "långfredag" where all entertainment was prohibited. While strict observances have relaxed, it remains a quiet, reflective day. Most shops, government offices, and banks close. Many Swedes spend the day at home or in nature as the long Easter weekend begins. Churches hold somber services, and families gather for meals featuring salmon, eggs, and lamb. Children dress as "påskkärringar" (Easter witches) on Thursday or Saturday rather than Friday.
