National Day Description
Sweden's National Day commemorates two historical events: the election of Gustav Vasa as king in 1523, laying the foundation of modern Sweden, and the adoption of the 1809 constitution. It became a public holiday only in 2005. Celebrations include the Royal Family's appearance at Skansen open-air museum in Stockholm, flag-raising ceremonies, and citizenship ceremonies for new Swedes. Public offices and banks close, though many businesses remain open. The day lacks the festive intensity of Midsummer but has been steadily growing in popularity, with many municipalities organizing concerts, markets, and family activities.
