National Day Description
Celebrating Singapore's independence on August 9, 1965, when the island separated from Malaysia to become a sovereign republic. The centerpiece is the National Day Parade (NDP), a spectacular event featuring military displays (mobile column, fly-past by the Republic of Singapore Air Force), precision marching contingents from the SAF, police, and civil defence, multicultural song-and-dance performances, and a mass-display segment involving thousands of performers. The parade culminates in the iconic fireworks display over the Marina Bay floating platform or Padang, with the crowd of red-and-white-clad Singaporeans reciting the National Pledge and singing patriotic songs like 'Home' and 'Count On Me, Singapore.' Government offices, banks, and most businesses close. Across the island, community centers host celebrations, HDB heartlands are decked in national flags, and the evening skies light up with simultaneous fireworks shows in multiple heartland locations.
