Total Defence Day Description
Commemorates the fall of Singapore to Japanese forces on February 15, 1942, which led to three and a half years of occupation during World War II — the darkest chapter in Singapore's history. Schools and military camps hold commemoration ceremonies and conduct emergency preparedness exercises nationwide. The Singapore Civil Defence Force sounds the Important Message Signal through the Public Warning System at 6:20 PM, the time of the British surrender, followed by a minute of silence. Museums and memorials, including Fort Siloso and the Changi Chapel and Museum, host special exhibitions. Government offices, banks, and most businesses close. Total Defence Day underscores the six pillars of Singapore's defence framework — military, civil, economic, social, psychological, and digital — reminding Singaporeans that national security rests on every citizen's readiness, born from the painful lesson that a nation cannot rely solely on others for its protection.
