Asarnha Bucha Day Description
One of Theravada Buddhism's most holy days, commemorating the Buddha's first sermon (the Dhammacakkappavattana Sutta) delivered to his five former companions at Deer Park in Sarnath, India, some 2,500 years ago. In this sermon, the Buddha explained the Middle Way, the Four Noble Truths, and the Noble Eightfold Path — the foundations of all Buddhist teaching. The following day (Khao Phansa) marks the beginning of Buddhist Lent. Devout Buddhists visit temples for alms-giving, listen to sermons, and participate in the wian tian candle procession. Government offices, banks, and most businesses close. The sale of alcohol is prohibited nationwide. Temples are illuminated by thousands of candles held by worshippers, and the air is thick with incense smoke and Pali chanting — a deeply moving, nationwide moment of spiritual devotion and communal reflection.
