Chakri Memorial Day Description
Commemorates the founding of the Chakri Dynasty by King Rama I (Phra Buddha Yodfa Chulaloke) in 1782, the royal house that has reigned over Thailand for over two centuries. The main ceremonies take place at the Royal Pantheon within the Temple of the Emerald Buddha (Wat Phra Kaew) in Bangkok's Grand Palace complex, where the current monarch leads a ceremony to pay respects to the statues of previous Chakri kings. Government officials, military personnel, and members of the public lay wreaths at the King Rama I Memorial. Government offices, banks, and most businesses close. The day is a profound expression of respect for the monarchy's continuous role in Thai nationhood, reflecting the deep reverence (kwam kao-rop) that characterizes Thai royal traditions.
