Coronation Day Description
Commemorates the coronation of King Maha Vajiralongkorn (Rama X) on May 4-6, 2019, a three-day ceremony of ancient Brahmanic and Buddhist rituals that formally consecrated him as the tenth monarch of the Chakri Dynasty. The day is marked by religious ceremonies at the Temple of the Emerald Buddha (Wat Phra Kaew) and merit-making activities at temples nationwide. Monks chant blessings for the King's long life and prosperous reign. Government buildings are decorated with the King's portrait and yellow flags (yellow being the royal color associated with Monday, the King's day of birth). Government offices, banks, and most businesses close. The holiday reinforces the sacred bond between the Thai monarchy and the people, celebrating the institution that has been central to Thai national identity for over 240 years under the Chakri Dynasty.
