International Workers' Day, observed in Thailand as a national holiday for both public and private sector workers. While Thailand's labor movement is relatively quiet compared to some countries, trade unions organize small rallies and events in Bangkok, often at Sanam Luang or near the Government House, advocating for higher minimum wages, improved working conditions, and social security reforms. Government offices, banks, and many businesses close, though retail and service sectors generally continue operations. For most Thais, the day provides a midweek rest, and some use it to extend their travels if it falls near a weekend. The holiday, though less culturally significant than Buddhist or royal observances, serves as an annual reminder of workers' contributions to the Thai economy and the ongoing development of labor rights.
