Makha Bucha Day Description
One of the most sacred days in Theravada Buddhism, commemorating the spontaneous gathering of 1,250 fully enlightened disciples before the Buddha, who then delivered the Ovada Patimokkha — a summary of Buddhist teachings on non-doing of evil, doing of good, and purification of the mind. Across Thailand, devout Buddhists visit temples in the early morning for tak bat (offering alms to monks). In the evening, the wian tian ceremony sees worshippers circling temple ordination halls three times holding lit candles, incense sticks, and lotus flowers. Government offices, banks, and most businesses close. The sale of alcohol is prohibited nationwide by law from midnight to midnight. Sermons on the Buddha's teachings are broadcast on television and radio, and the day is observed with a quiet, contemplative reverence that pervades the entire country.
