Songkran Festival (Day 1) Description
The first day of Songkran, the Thai traditional New Year and the world's biggest water fight. Originally a gentle ritual of pouring scented water over elders' hands and Buddha images to symbolize cleansing and renewal, it has evolved into a nationwide water festival of joyful chaos. Streets across Thailand — most famously Khao San Road and Silom Road in Bangkok, the moat area in Chiang Mai, and Pattaya's beach road — become massive water battle zones with revelers armed with water guns, hoses, and buckets. Temples see more traditional observances: merit-making, building sand pagodas, and the Rod Nam Dam Hua ceremony where younger people pour water over elders to seek blessings. Government offices, banks, and most businesses close. The three-day holiday is also the peak period for Thai family reunions, as millions travel from cities to their home provinces.
