Commemoration of Ataturk, Youth and Sports Day Description

Commemorates Mustafa Kemal Ataturk's landing at Samsun on May 19, 1919, which launched the Turkish War of Independence against occupying Allied powers — a date considered the birth of the modern Turkish national movement. Ataturk dedicated this day to the youth of Turkey, whom he saw as the guardians of the Republic's future. Across the country, stadiums host elaborate youth and sports festivals featuring gymnastics displays, folk dance performances, and mass choreographed routines by thousands of students. In Samsun, reenactments of Ataturk's arrival from the Bandirma steamship are held. An official ceremony with the President takes place at Anitkabir, Ataturk's mausoleum in Ankara. Government offices, banks, and most businesses close. The day brings a surge of national pride, with Turkish flags appearing on every balcony and the strains of the national anthem (Istiklal Marsi) and the 'Youth Anthem' (Genclik Marsi) filling the air.
