Labour Day Description
International Workers' Day, officially recognized as a national holiday in Turkey. The day is marked by mass rallies and marches organized by labor unions, left-wing political parties, and workers' organizations — the most significant gathering traditionally takes place at Taksim Square in Istanbul, the site of the 1977 Taksim Square massacre where dozens of demonstrators were killed, making May Day in Turkey particularly charged with historical memory. Security is typically tight, with access to Taksim often restricted or rerouted to alternative venues like Maltepe or Bakirkoy. Government offices, banks, and most businesses close. Union leaders deliver speeches demanding better wages, working conditions, and labor rights. For many Turks not involved in the rallies, the holiday provides a day of rest. The day reflects the enduring strength and political visibility of Turkey's labor movement, even as its observance oscillates between celebration and commemoration of past struggles.
