The most important secular national holiday, celebrating the proclamation of the Republic of Turkey by Mustafa Kemal Ataturk and the Grand National Assembly on October 29, 1923, abolishing the Ottoman Sultanate and establishing a modern, secular republic. The day features grand official ceremonies at Anitkabir in Ankara, military parades, and the President's reception at the Cankaya Presidential Palace. Navy vessels perform a spectacular lights and salute parade through the Bosphorus in Istanbul. Schools, government buildings, and homes are draped in Turkish flags and illuminated at night. Torchlight processions march through streets in thousands of neighborhoods, echoing Ataturk's words: 'Sovereignty belongs unconditionally to the nation.' Government offices, banks, and most businesses close. In the evening, spectacular fireworks displays and folk music concerts fill city squares.
