New Year's Day (Gregorian) Description
The first day of the Gregorian calendar year, known as Tet Duong Lich (Western New Year) to distinguish it from the far more significant Lunar New Year. While a public holiday, the celebration is relatively subdued compared to Tet Nguyen Dan. In major cities like Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, countdown events and fireworks displays are held at central locations — Hoan Kiem Lake in Hanoi and Nguyen Hue Walking Street in Saigon. Young people gather for street parties, concerts, and photographing festive light displays. Government offices, banks, and most businesses close. For many Vietnamese, this single day off is a brief rest before the intense preparations for Tet begin in earnest. The day lacks the traditional rituals of the Lunar New Year; rather, it has been embraced as a modern, urban celebration influenced by international New Year customs.
