Family Day Description
The South African name for Easter Monday, deliberately rebranded after 1994 to emphasize family values rather than exclusively Christian observance, reflecting the country's multi-faith society. The day sees families across racial and cultural lines gathering for large meals, outdoor activities, and community events. The tradition of the Easter picnic (often featuring boerewors — South African sausage — on the braai, salads, and chocolate Easter eggs) is widespread in parks and botanical gardens from Kirstenbosch in Cape Town to the Walter Sisulu Botanical Gardens in Johannesburg. Government offices, banks, and most businesses close. Combined with the preceding Good Friday, this holiday completes the four-day Easter weekend — one of the country's most valued breaks. For many South Africans, this extended weekend is also the final opportunity for holiday travel before the onset of winter in the southern hemisphere, with coastal resorts like Durban's Golden Mile and the Wild Coast drawing families for a last warm-weather getaway.
