Good Friday Description
A solemn Christian holiday commemorating the crucifixion of Jesus Christ, observed by South Africa's large Christian population that spans all racial groups, from Dutch Reformed and Anglican churches among Afrikaners and English-speaking whites to the Zionist Christian Church (ZCC) — one of Africa's largest indigenous churches — and Catholic congregations among black South Africans. Churches hold passion services, with the Moravian Church in the Western Cape continuing its centuries-old tradition of trombone choirs leading Good Friday processions. Many Christians fast and attend extended services. Government offices, banks, and most businesses close. In a country where Christianity remains a powerful social force across communities, Good Friday is widely respected even by non-observant citizens. Combined with Family Day (Easter Monday), the four-day Easter weekend is a major break, with families gathering for traditional meals including pickled fish (a Cape Malay specialty) and hot cross buns.
