International Workers' Day, celebrated with particular significance in South Africa where the labor movement played a pivotal role in the anti-apartheid struggle. The Congress of South African Trade Unions (COSATU), the country's largest trade union federation and a key alliance partner of the ANC, organizes mass rallies in major cities — notably at stadiums in Johannesburg (FNB Stadium), Durban (Moses Mabhida), and Cape Town — where workers' leaders and government officials address issues of wages, unemployment, inequality, and the protection of workers' rights. Government offices, banks, and most businesses close. For trade union members, the day is an assertion of working-class power rooted in the history of black trade unions that organized against apartheid's exploitation.
