Labour Day in Canada traces back to 1872, when the Toronto Trades Assembly organized a major workers' demonstration — the first significant labor protest in Canadian history. Prime Minister John A. Macdonald repealed anti-union laws soon after, and the day was officially recognized as a federal holiday in 1894.

🎉 How It's Celebrated

Labour Day parades, organized by unions, still march through Toronto, Ottawa, and other cities, celebrating workers' rights. For most Canadians, it's the long weekend marking summer's end — the last cottage trip, the final camping weekend. Students prepare to return to school on the Tuesday after Labour Day (the traditional start of the academic year).
