Victoria Day was established in 1845 to celebrate Queen Victoria's birthday (May 24, 1819). After her death in 1901, it became an official Canadian holiday, and in 1952 it was fixed to the Monday before May 25. The holiday also now serves as the official birthday of the current Canadian sovereign.
