📜 History & Origins

The Mid-Autumn Festival emerged from moon worship rituals during the Zhou Dynasty (1046-256 BCE) and became an established festival in the Tang Dynasty. The legend of Chang'e — the moon goddess who consumed an immortality elixir and flew to the moon — is central to the festival, alongside the story of the moon rabbit endlessly pounding medicine.

🎉 How It's Celebrated

Families gather for outdoor moon-viewing (shang yue) on rooftops, in gardens, or at lakesides. Lanterns in the shape of rabbits, fish, and dragons are carried by children and floated on water. Pomelos are displayed as symbols of reunion and good fortune. In southern China, the fire dragon dance fills Hong Kong's Tai Hang district with a 67-meter incense-lit dragon. Mooncakes are exchanged as gifts among family, friends, and business associates.

Mooncakes — rich pastries filled with lotus seed paste, salted egg yolk, or mixed nuts — are the iconic food. Pomelos and round fruits (symbolizing fullness and reunion) are shared. Hairy crabs from Yangcheng Lake are the seasonal delicacy of choice in eastern China.
