Qingming, the clear-and-bright spring memorial, sends families to sweep tombs, burn incense, and offer food or paper gifts. Old Cold Food echoes and poetry on transience linger in the background. Kites, hillside picnics, and tree planting mix sorrow with renewal. Willow twigs and simple rites vary by region yet affirm lineage and quiet bonds between living and dead.

📜 History & Origins

Qingming Festival dates back over 2,500 years to the Zhou Dynasty. It absorbed customs from the ancient Hanshi (Cold Food) Festival, which commemorated Jie Zitui, a loyal retainer who died in a fire rather than seek reward. The Tang Dynasty (618-907) officially recognized Qingming as a time for tomb sweeping, cementing its dual role of mourning and spring celebration.

🎉 How It's Celebrated

Families visit ancestral graves to sweep, remove weeds, and leave offerings of food, flowers, and spirit money. Willow branches are hung on doors or worn as garlands — an ancient custom said to ward off ghosts. At the same time, the festival embraces spring with outings (taqing): kite flying, countryside picnics, and spring walks through blooming fields. Wilted kite strings are deliberately cut to release misfortune.

🍽️ Traditional Foods

Qingtuan — green glutinous rice balls filled with sweet red bean paste, colored with mugwort juice — are the signature Qingming food of eastern China. Cold foods echoing the Hanshi tradition include pre-prepared noodles and cold dishes.
