Ascension Day Description
Ascension Day (Christi Himmelfahrt) on Thursday, May 14, 2026 is a nationwide public holiday across all 16 German federal states. It marks the Christian belief of Jesus Christ's ascension to heaven, occurring 40 days after Easter. In secular German culture, this day is widely known as Vatertag (Father's Day) or Männertag (Men's Day), and is celebrated quite differently from the religious observance. Groups of men, often friends, undertake hiking or cycling tours pulling decorated handcarts (Bollerwagen) filled with beer and food — a tradition dating back to the 18th century. Parks, forest trails, and beer gardens are notably crowded. Government offices, banks, schools, and most businesses are closed. Many workers take the following Friday as a bridge day (Brückentag) to create a four-day long weekend. Public transport operates on Sunday/holiday schedules. Alcohol consumption in public is legal and common on this day; travelers should be aware of lively groups in recreational areas.
