Labour Day Description

International Workers' Day is observed across Spain with trade union demonstrations in major cities, particularly in Madrid and Barcelona. May 1 commemorates the 1886 Haymarket affair in Chicago and the global struggle for the eight-hour workday. Spanish workers first marked the day in 1890, and it became a flashpoint of socialist and anarchist organizing through the Second Republic (1931–1939). The Franco regime banned public celebrations but quietly rebranded it as the Catholic "Fiesta de San José Obrero"; democratic May Day marches returned in 1977 after Franco's death and have continued annually.

Spain's two largest unions, the CCOO and UGT, organize flagship marches through central Madrid and Barcelona, with banners demanding wage increases, shorter working weeks, and protections for precarious and migrant workers. Political leaders address crowds from union platforms. Away from the protests, families take advantage of spring weather for countryside picnics, and the long "puente" bridge weekends launch early-summer travel to the coast.
