October 12, 1492, is the date Christopher Columbus's expedition made landfall on Guanahaní (San Salvador) in the Bahamas. The day was promoted as a shared feast linking Spain and Spanish-speaking America from the early 20th century, and Pope John Paul II dedicated it to Our Lady of the Pillar, patroness of the Hispanic world. In 1987, Spain's democratic government officially renamed it the Fiesta Nacional de España to unify civic celebration while sidestepping Franco-era connotations of conquest and Falangist pageantry.
