Republic Day Description
Republic Day on January 26th commemorates the adoption of the Indian Constitution in 1950, when India became a sovereign democratic republic. It is one of India's three national holidays (alongside Independence Day and Gandhi Jayanti) and is a mandatory gazetted holiday nationwide. The centerpiece is the grand Republic Day Parade along Rajpath (now Kartavya Path) in New Delhi, showcasing India's military strength with marching contingents, tanks, missile systems, and flypasts by the Indian Air Force, alongside colorful tableaux representing each state's cultural heritage. The President of India takes the salute, and a foreign head of state is traditionally invited as the chief guest. The Beating Retreat ceremony at Vijay Chowk on January 29th marks the formal end of Republic Day celebrations, with military bands performing against the backdrop of Rashtrapati Bhavan. Government offices, banks, post offices, schools, and most businesses are closed nationwide. Public transport runs on holiday schedules, with significant road closures around central Delhi during parade rehearsals in the preceding weeks. The parade is televised live nationwide, and many Indians celebrate by hoisting the national flag at home.
